The
traditional par 72, Donald Ross, championship Ponce de Leon course was a regular
tour stop for Gene Sarzan, Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Sam Snead, Tommy Armour
and many more. The front nine is a "lynks style' layout running along
the picturesque marshlands of the intracoastal waterway. Although the holes
seem open, the bunker placement and the wind always makes it interesting.
The front nine is in contrast to the back nine which meanders through the
"Florida Forest". The fairways are lined with magnolia, oak, palm
and pine trees and play is a bit tighter.
The
World Golf Village will feature 3 courses with 54 holes of championship golf.
Owned and operated by Scratch Golf Company of Hilton Head, SC, The Slammer
and The Squire, which opens March 1, was created by local golf course designer
Bobby Weed and PGA TOUR Design Services, with golf legends Sam Snead and Gene
Sarazen tapped as player consultants. With its clubhouse just yards from the
World Golf Hall of Fame, The Slammer and The Squire meanders naturally through
native flatwoods and hardwood hammocks, and bordering wetland preserves and
wildlife habitat.
There's
never been a course like this one. For the first time in history, Arnold Palmer
and jack Nicklaus have paired to create The King & The Bear at World Golf
Village.Working together, these two golfing legends have collaborated on a
truly remarkable golf course of unparalleled beauty, challenge and design.
The course features loblolly pines and open meadows on the front nine while
the natural beauty of 200-year-old live oaks with huge shady canopies perfectly
complement the back nine. There are other championship courses but there is
only one The King & The Bear. Opening November 2000.
